Dr. John Ross Grace
– A Member of the Canadian Society for Chemical EngineeringDr. Grace obtained his Bachelor of Applied Science from the University of Western Ontario, and a PhD from Cambridge University in the UK in Chemical Engineering. For the first decade or so of his career he taught at McGill University and spent two years as a Senior Project Engineer with SNC Inc of Montreal. He then joined the University of British Columbia where he is now a Professor in the Faculty of Applied Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering.
Professor Grace’s international reputation has been built on his landing research in fluidized beds. His contributions on fluidization regime, circulating fluidized beds, fluidized bed combustion and gasification, and reactor modeling are shown by his 200 plus publications, many awards and numerous invited speeches at conferences. Under his leadership, the University of British Columbia established an internationally renowned laboratory for studying fluidized bed combustion and behaviour. Studies in this centre resulted in new designs for combustion systems that are now used around the world. It is not coincidental that his PhD thesis at the Cambridge University dealt with the behaviour of baffled and unfluidized beds.
In recognition of extraordinary achievements Dr. Grace has received many awards from Universities and Institutes across Canada and abroad including the highest award to a chemical engineer, the R.S. Jane Award. As well his book, co-authored with Cliff and Weber on the hydrodynamics of bubbles, drops and particles remains a standard reference in fluid and particle dynamics. A scholarship has been created in his name to permanently recognize his contribution to the University of British Columbia.
Professor Grace is also an excellent educator, with classes that are among the best in the department. His past graduate students are now scattered over the world, some of them professors, making significant contributions themselves. In Canada alone, there are over a dozen professors who worked under his direction. In quick summary, apart from direct supervision of undergraduate and graduate students and their related theses, an additional new 50 post-doctoral fellows, research engineers and visiting scholars have received direct supervision.
Little wonder that his innate respect for others shines through in testimonials to Professor Grace, and then reflects on him as one of the outstanding Professors of Engineering in Canada.Ladies and Gentlemen - tonight we recognize Dr. Grace as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada – a well-deserved honour.
Mr. President – Dr. John Ross Grace
